Moderaterna's Bold Vision: Making Sweden the Richest EU Nation and Decentralizing Governance

Moderaterna has unveiled an ambitious economic plan aimed at propelling Sweden to become the richest country in the European Union within the next ten years. The strategy centers on a three-step approach: safeguarding public finances, ensuring that work offers tangible rewards, and boosting Sweden’s appeal as an investment hub. The party proposes €70 billion SEK in financing to support these initiatives, aiming for average families to see an increase of 5,000 kronor in monthly income through tax cuts and benefits. In addition, Moderaterna intends to lower corporate taxes and streamline business approvals to enhance investment attractiveness.

The party is critical of the previous administration led by Magdalena Andersson, accusing it of leaving the Swedish economy hampered by high inflation and sluggish growth. Moderaterna warns that the red-green coalition’s proposed tax increases could derail economic recovery, potentially plunging the nation back into recession. They stress that the current recovery hinges on rising domestic demand, which must not be undermined.

On the governance front, Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer has revealed plans to relocate parts of the governmental leadership temporarily from Stockholm to Göteborg and Malmö. This move, planned for several weeks next year, aims to ground decision-makers more deeply in local realities, addressing concerns that the capital-based state apparatus might overlook important regional conditions. Strömmer remarked on the necessity of embedding a local perspective to improve policy effectiveness.
