Miljöpartiet Proposes Six Kronor Fuel Price Increase to Meet Sweden's Climate Goals

Miljöpartiet (the Green Party) has announced plans to raise fuel prices by six kronor per liter if it influences government policy following the upcoming election. Amanda Lind, the party's spokesperson, detailed the proposal in interviews with SVT and Svenska Dagbladet, emphasizing a controlled, gradual approach to price increases as part of broader efforts to meet Sweden's 2030 climate targets.

According to Lind, the proposed increase comes from two main components: the removal of temporary tax cuts on fossil fuels, which would raise prices by four kronor per liter, and an additional two kronor per liter resulting from increased blending of renewable fuels into the gasoline supply. These measures aim to encourage a shift toward sustainable biofuels and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Lind criticized the current and past government's environmental policies, pointing out that recent reductions in fossil fuel taxes have led to increased emissions and that renewable fuel blending has been scaled back in recent years.

The party also highlighted the importance of mitigating the economic impact on vulnerable groups. Lind proposed a "green rebate" scheme to provide financial support for low-income households and residents in rural areas where alternatives to car travel are limited. This initiative is intended to offset the burden of higher fuel prices on those most affected.

Lind additionally warned against abrupt price spikes, noting that fuel prices are expected to rise this autumn regardless due to the expiration of temporary tax reliefs and the upcoming implementation of the EU's emissions trading system in 2028. The proposed gradual increases are designed to avoid a price shock.

The price rise also seeks to bring Swedish fuel costs in line with neighboring countries, which according to an independent investigation, currently have higher fuel prices. The party's environmental and economic strategy centers on sustainable energy self-sufficiency and equitable support for those impacted by the green transition.

As the election approaches, Miljöpartiet aims to prioritize climate action through these tax and subsidy changes while balancing social considerations. If the party participates in the new government, its fuel price proposal could significantly influence Sweden's environmental policies in the coming years.
