Mattias Ekholm Embraces World Championship Despite Olympic Snub and Coaching Tensions

Mattias Ekholm, the seasoned Swedish defenseman, is committing to the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship in Fribourg, Switzerland, despite his frustration over being omitted from the Olympic team. The 35-year-old, who previously secured gold with Sweden in 2018, has experienced tensions with head coach Sam Hallam during the past two seasons, particularly concerning his limited playing time during the 2025 Four Nations tournament. Ekholm voiced his disappointment publicly, remarking, "I think we might sometimes be a bit conflict-averse in Sweden; being disappointed just means you care." Despite this, he remains resolute about representing Tre Kronor and is eager to play alongside young talents he considers the country's future stars.

Sweden is placed in Group B, competing against strong teams including Canada, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. Their opening match will be on May 15 against a formidable Canadian squad led by Sidney Crosby. Ekholm is optimistic about the team's chances, acknowledging the nerves surrounding the initial game. The group stage matches are scheduled to take place in the BCF Arena in Fribourg from May 15 to May 26, with playoffs commencing May 28.

After a difficult NHL season with Edmonton, which ended in a first-round playoff exit, Ekholm feels revitalized with “a lot left in the tank.” Both he and coach Hallam have discussed past disagreements without feeling the need for further confrontation. Hallam understands the disappointment of players left out of major tournaments like the Olympics. As the championship progresses, Ekholm’s focus is on leveraging team dynamics and his own experience to aim for success on the international stage.
