Massive Water Leak in Norrköping Floods Dozens of Homes in Ljura

A major water leak struck the Ljura district of Norrköping on October 23, 2025, causing extensive flooding that affected between 30 to 50 properties along approximately 400 meters of Ljuragatan. The incident prompted a significant emergency response, with 15 to 20 firefighters collaborating closely with municipal water authorities to control the flooding and pump water out of basements and garages.

The leak, which emergency services were alerted to shortly after 2 PM, wreaked havoc in a residential block, flooding streets, gardens, basements, and garages. Residents described the situation as chaotic and crisis-like. Ann-Sofie Löw, a local resident, recalled the terrifying scene where water reached nearly to the rooftops of cars and garage doors, with some neighbors suffering completely flooded basements. She noted her own basement was less severely affected but her garden turned into a makeshift swimming pool. Another resident, Ulla Dahlén, reported her laundry room was filled with water, highlighting the severe infiltration.

Daniel Asp from the rescue service described the scene as "gigantic," emphasizing both the scale of the damage and the ongoing emergency work to contain the water. As of early evening, emergency crews were still actively pumping water from affected properties, with no definite timeline for resolution. Residents have been advised to conserve drinking water due to the impact on supply, humorously suggested by Löw as potentially requiring drinking milk temporarily.

Road access in the area remains difficult, and residents are urged to remain cautious as cleanup and repairs continue. The incident underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure and the challenges faced by local authorities responding to sudden and large-scale water emergencies.
