Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk Receives Four-Year Doping Ban, Impacting Rivalries

Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk, a 30-year-old Ukrainian athlete celebrated for her prowess in the long jump and triple jump, has been handed a four-year ban from competition due to elevated testosterone levels detected in a doping test from December 2024. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced the ruling on August 19, 2025, following her provisional suspension that had been in place since May of this year. Despite her claims of not knowingly ingesting prohibited substances, Bekh-Romanchuk was unable to satisfactorily explain the elevated hormone levels during her hearing.

Bekh-Romanchuk is a distinguished competitor with a collection of medals, including two silver medals at the World Championships. This ban notably affects her rivalry with Swedish athlete Maja Åskag, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in women's athletics, particularly in the triple jump events.

In her defense, Bekh-Romanchuk mentioned having taken a break from training for personal reasons after the Paris Olympics while ensuring her medications were compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) guidelines.
