Malmö's New Coalition Government Raises Municipal Tax to Fund Welfare and Climate Initiatives

Malmö's newly formed coalition government, consisting of the Social Democrats (S), Left Party (V), and Green Party (MP), has announced a 30 öre increase in the municipal tax for the next year. This progressive measure aims to finance key initiatives focused on climate transition, welfare improvements, and enhancing social equality in the city. Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), who led the coalition announcement, stressed the tax hike reflects residents' support for policies prioritizing equality, inclusion, and reducing disparities.

The coalition holds a majority with 35 out of 61 seats in Malmö's municipal council, marking a return for the Left Party, which achieved a record 17.4% vote share in this year's municipal election. This marks a new four-year red-green government, replacing the previous coalition that included the Liberals but dissolved due to disagreements.

Unlike previous administrations focused on budget balancing, this tax increase is a proactive investment in Malmö's future welfare services, such as smaller class sizes, and climate leadership. Nina Jakku from the Left Party expressed optimism about implementing local policies through the new agreement, while Stefana Hoti from the Green Party highlighted Malmö’s continued historic leadership in climate transition.

Stjernfeldt Jammeh reassured the public that Malmö’s economy remains stable and that the tax rise is intended for positive, long-term community benefits. The coalition’s "offensive agenda" positions Malmö as a progressive city dedicated to promoting economic fairness and environmental responsibility through this decisive municipal tax adjustment.
