Major Train Disruptions as Freight Train Derails Near Göteborg

Train services between Göteborg and Borås were halted on June 25, 2026, following the derailment of a 600-meter-long freight train near Olsfors in Göteborg's vicinity. Several carriages of the train derailed in the afternoon, leading to the cancellation of Västtåg services between Borås and Göteborg as well as severe impacts on routes between Göteborg–Stockholm and Göteborg–Kalmar. According to the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), repairs to damaged contact wire poles and contact wires, caused by the derailment, could take several days to complete. Denny Josefsson, a Trafikverket spokesperson, estimated that it may take "a couple of days" to restore normal traffic.

No injuries have been reported, and police confirmed the train was not carrying any dangerous cargo. The incident is suspected to have been influenced by "solkurvor" or sun-induced rail deformations, with the region experiencing nearly 30 degrees Celsius at the time, according to rescue leader Christian Karlsson. SJ, the operator of affected train services, is seeking permission to reroute trains via Öxnered but has yet to secure confirmation. Meanwhile, SJ passengers have been advised to use Västtrafik’s bus route 100 as an alternative.

This disruption emphasizes the vulnerability of rail infrastructure to heat-related issues, complicating travel across southern Sweden. Authorities continue to evaluate the damage, prioritizing swift repair efforts to minimize passenger inconvenience and maintain connectivity on these vital routes.
