Magdalena Andersson Entrusted to Form Sweden's Government Amid Potential Speaker Transition

Following the 2026 Swedish parliamentary elections, the government formation process has entered a pivotal phase. Andreas Norlén, Speaker of the Riksdag, has asked Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats to explore possibilities for forming a new government after Ulf Kristersson requested to resign as Prime Minister. Andersson accepted the assignment with a commitment to prioritize Sweden and its citizens while calling for broad political cooperation beyond party tactics.

All party leaders except Kristersson met with Norlén to discuss next steps, and while there is no deadline set for Andersson to report back, the political landscape indicates significant shifts. Notably, the position of Speaker of the Riksdag is expected to change. Traditionally, the largest party holds the Speaker role, and with the Social Democrats gaining a majority among the red-green parties, they are likely to nominate a candidate to succeed Norlén. The Speaker election is scheduled for September 28.

Despite these expectations, veteran Left Party politician Ulla Andersson advocated for Andreas Norlén to remain in his role, praising his effective leadership since 2018 and highlighting the importance of stability amid a politically divided Sweden. In the recent elections, the Left Party improved its standing to 8.4% of the vote, bolstering its role in government talks. The new Speaker will play a crucial role in the formation process by proposing candidates for the prime minister post.

This government formation phase has begun with greater cooperation than previous cycles; the last formation took 37 days compared to 134 days in 2018. However, party leaders hold differing views on the ease and timeline of establishing a government.

Magdalena Andersson expressed humility and determination in her statement: "Political forces must set aside party tactics for the sake of Sweden and its people." Meanwhile, Norlén remains in office during this period of transition, facilitating discussions among party leaders and preparing for the important Speaker election at the end of September.
