Low Diesel Prices in Sweden Drive Fuel Tourism Among Foreign Truckers

Sweden's substantially reduced diesel prices have attracted foreign trucking companies to adjust their routes to refuel within the country, resulting in notable cost savings. According to Tina Thorsell, head of public policy at Transportföretagen, long-haul trucks can save thousands of kronor per full tank by refueling in Sweden. For example, as of July 23, filling a 1,000-liter tank cost 16,300 kronor in Sweden, enabling Finnish carriers to save about 7,500 kronor, Danish carriers 5,800 kronor, and Norwegian carriers 4,000 kronor compared to their home countries.

This surge in fuel tourism is particularly evident at Swedish border stations, attracting vehicles from Denmark, Germany, Norway, and Finland. Historically, Swedish trucks tended to wait to refuel until leaving the country, but now the pattern is reversed with many large foreign trucks choosing Swedish fuel stations instead.

The Swedish government's strategic cuts to fuel taxes have been fundamental to this price advantage. By reducing energy taxes to the EU's minimum level and temporarily lowering carbon taxes and biodiesel blending obligations, the government has lowered fuel prices significantly, despite costing the state approximately 9.3 billion kronor. These interventions have positioned Sweden among the countries with the lowest fuel prices in the EU as of mid-July.

Industry representatives from Denmark and Norway have observed and confirmed the increased trend of foreign trucks refueling in Sweden, especially amid fluctuating fuel prices in Norway. Tina Thorsell emphasizes that transport companies face considerable financial pressure, driving them to refuel where fuel costs are minimized.
