Liberals Struggle to Stay Relevant as Sweden Democrats Set Election Deadline

As the 2026 Swedish election approaches, the Liberal Party (Liberalerna) is facing critical challenges to its political survival. Sweden Democrats (SD) leader Jimmie Åkesson has publicly urged voters not to support Liberalerna unless the party reaches at least 3.5% in polls within ten days of the election, labeling votes below that threshold as wasted. Current polling, however, shows the Liberals hovering at only 1.9%.

Simona Mohamsson, leader of the Liberals, rejected the notion that her party is giving up, stating her commitment to the Tidö coalition remains firm despite internal frustrations. She also emphasized that a blue-yellow coalition would be unfeasible without Liberalerna, threatening both Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's position and Åkesson's ministerial ambitions.

Meanwhile, political commentator Tomas Ramberg highlighted how the Liberals have "dug their own grave" due to inconsistent political maneuvering, which has undermined their credibility. Åkesson's strategic move to discourage Liberal votes is seen as an effort to consolidate SD's dominance in the right-wing opposition heading toward the next elections in 2030. The future alliances among the right-wing parties remain uncertain as moderate and Christian democratic parties seek to regain independence from SD's shadow.

Kristersson has encouraged voters to support Moderaterna with the Liberals' fate hinging on three weeks of intensive campaigning. Mohamsson criticized other Tidö leaders for exhibiting a defeatist attitude, underscoring ongoing internal tensions. The coming weeks will be crucial for Liberalerna's survival and the broader composition of Sweden’s right-wing political landscape.
