Liberals Reject Opposition's Proposal to Freeze Teenage Deportations Ahead of 2026 Elections

As Sweden approaches its September 13, 2026 elections, the debate over teenage deportations intensifies. The Liberal Party, led by Simona Mohamsson, has firmly rejected a proposal from opposition parties—including the Social Democrats, Left Party, Center Party, and Green Party—that called for freezing deportations of teenagers until a permanent solution is found. Mohamsson stated that the government is actively working toward a resolution, despite opposition criticism accusing her of misunderstanding the proposal.

Meanwhile, Migration Minister Johan Forssell of the Moderate Party emphasized the urgency of addressing the teenage deportations issue, indicating that a solution could be reached sooner than previously expected. Forssell clarified, "I have never said that we should wait until next year; I am eager for us to have a solution as soon as possible," showing a proactive stance from the government side.

This development follows ongoing controversies surrounding youth and justice legislation, as the Swedish government has recently proposed expanding investigative powers and coercive measures against minors, including extending detention periods from three to five months.
