Legal Controversies Surround Swedish Politicians Over Nightclub Permit and Sundsvall Investigation

The first centers on the nightclub Trädgården in Stockholm, where the Mark- och miljööverdomstolen (Environmental Court of Appeal) revoked the club’s building permit in late June. This decision came after the court found that the permit violated the detailed zoning plan for the area, which restricts use to port activities only. Despite this verdict, Stockholm city officials assured residents and supporters that Trädgården would remain open for at least two more years via a rental agreement, while efforts to amend the zoning plan continue to possibly secure a new permit. The situation has garnered widespread support among thousands of Stockholm residents and across political parties, with politicians publicly backing the nightclub’s operation. However, criticism has been directed at these politicians and the city planning committee for potentially breaching legal governance and impartiality, leading to a formal complaint. In another case, suspicions against Sweden Democrats (SD) politician Timothy Brander-Lie were dropped in the ongoing economic crime investigation into Sundsvall’s logistics park valuation. Originally involving 18 suspects, the number has now decreased to 17. The probe, initiated in January following a joint operation by the Economic Crime Authority and police, explored potential irregularities in the park’s valuation. Kevin Sahlin of SD commented positively on the dismissal of suspicions against Brander-Lie.
