Large Forest Fire Rages Near Gävle, Emergency Services Respond

A significant forest fire is actively burning near Hanåsen in Gävle municipality, covering more than 25 hectares as of Sunday afternoon. Emergency services responded promptly after the alarm was raised at 10:06 AM, deploying four fire stations and two helicopters to battle the blaze. Despite these efforts, by 2:45 PM the fire was still out of control and had spread slightly beyond the initial area.

Officials have not provided a definitive timetable for when the fire might be extinguished, as dry conditions and the extent of the blaze pose challenges. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a fire warning for large parts of eastern Götaland, eastern Svealand, and much of Gävleborg County, highlighting the ongoing high risk of forest fires in these regions.

Thankfully, no buildings are currently threatened by the fire, and emergency responders continue working into the night with hopes that incoming rain will aid firefighting efforts. The operation remains focused on containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading further.

Meanwhile, a separate incident occurred near Vretstorp outside Örebro where a large fire broke out in several buildings including a barn, affecting traffic on the nearby E20 highway due to heavy smoke. Two individuals were hospitalized from this incident, and firefighting operations are expected to continue for several hours. Though not connected, the Vretstorp fire underscores the heightened fire risk conditions prevailing across multiple parts of Sweden.
