Karl Marius Aksum Named New Head Coach as Anders Torstensson Moves to Technical Director at Mjällby AIF

Mjällby AIF has announced a significant coaching transition, appointing Karl Marius Aksum as the new head coach starting in 2026. Aksum, 35, who had been the assistant coach since 2023, steps into the role after leading the team to a historic Swedish championship and setting a new Allsvenskan points record with 75 points last season. His contract extends through the 2028 season.

Anders Torstensson, who led Mjällby to their first-ever SM-guld and an impressive 75-point season, will transition to the role of technical director. The decision was influenced by Torstensson's ongoing battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and family considerations. Torstensson expressed mixed feelings about stepping down but emphasized that the transition allows him to remain influential in the club's future and provide support as Mjällby aims for European competition qualification.

Club CEO Jacob Lennartsson highlighted the importance of both coaches in Mjällby's recent successes, describing the move as a strategic long-term solution. Aksum, originally from Norway, has a doctorate in visual perception and previously coached Odds BK’s P19 team before joining Mjällby. His expertise in sports science has contributed to implementing a more attacking style of play at the club.

Torstensson noted that although the decision was difficult, it was reached with his family's input, and he values the opportunity to continue contributing to Mjällby's growth. Meanwhile, Aksum expressed gratitude for the club's trust and highlighted the special bond he has formed with the team and community, embracing the responsibility to build on their recent achievements.
