Investigation Underway After Fatal Collision Between Norwegian Vessel and Leisure Boat Near Tjörn

On July 28, a tragic maritime collision occurred near Tjörn, Sweden, when the Norwegian commercial ship Misje Verde struck a seven-meter leisure boat named Doris, resulting in the deaths of a mother and a child. The leisure boat was carrying a family of four; the father and one child were rescued. The incident took place as Misje Verde traveled south through Hakefjorden at approximately 12 knots, with a Russian captain and a Swedish pilot on board the vessel's bridge.

Following the accident, both the Russian captain and Swedish pilot have been charged with causing death, bodily harm, and negligence in maritime traffic. The captain reportedly shifted his focus to administrative tasks on a computer after receiving what he believed was verbal confirmation from the pilot that he could steer the ship alone. However, the pilot contended that the captain misunderstood who held responsibility as the officer in charge.

Radar evidence played a significant role in the investigation. Prosecutor James von Reis stated that the leisure boat was clearly visible on the ship's radar before the collision. The Accident Investigation Board confirmed that both the leisure boat and another vessel were detected on radar, suggesting that a proper lookout was not maintained by the captain. Both accused parties have shifted blame to each other, denying prior visual detection of the leisure boat, despite radar data indicating otherwise.
