Investigation Deepens Following Boat Collision Near Tjörn with Two Missing

A serious maritime incident near Tjörn has left a mother and daughter missing after their recreational boat collided with a 90-meter cargo ship in the heavily trafficked Hakefjorden shipping lane on Tuesday evening. Two others from the boat were rescued. The Swedish police have seized the cargo ship suspected of involvement and are conducting a detailed investigation, including examining the ship’s hull for collision traces, police spokesperson Fredrik Svedemyr confirmed.

The collision’s circumstances are complicated by the fact that the cargo ship’s company reported no awareness of the incident. Maritime expert Mats Gruvefeldt, head of the Chalmers Maritime Academy, explained that such collisions can go unnoticed by both parties, especially given the challenges larger vessels face in detecting smaller boats despite advanced technical identification systems. He emphasized that Hakefjorden’s narrow shipping lane and heavy traffic require careful seamanship.

Police have been tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, stating the search for the missing is currently paused after the life-saving rescue operation concluded. The Swedish Sea Rescue Society indicated they may have located the wreckage site, though this has not been officially confirmed by the police. Rescue divers remain involved in the search efforts, but it is uncertain if searching will continue overnight due to difficulties such as darkness.

The police ordered the ship to turn back after suspecting the collision and began forensic work on the vessel. As the investigation proceeds, authorities continue working to determine the collision’s details and locate the missing persons. The tragic event highlights the inherent risks and detection challenges of maritime navigation involving large and small vessels in congested waters.
