Internal Turmoil Escalates in Liberalerna Over Sweden Democrats Cooperation

The Swedish Liberal Party (Liberalerna) is facing increasing internal dissent and leadership challenges due to its decision to cooperate with the right-wing Sweden Democrats (SD). Despite the party board’s support for the SD agreement, prominent members and youth factions are expressing strong opposition in what has become a significant crisis within the party.

Party leader Simona Mohamsson’s position now hinges on the controversial agreement with SD. However, discontent is mounting among SD opponents, with some members losing trust in Mohamsson’s leadership. Notably, Cecilia Rönn, Liberalerna’s economic policy spokesperson and MP from Halland, has voiced her concerns and warned that she will not stand as a candidate if the party congress endorses the cooperation with SD.

The Liberal Youth of Sweden (Liberala ungdomsförbundet, Luf) have publicly criticized Mohamsson and the party’s shift in stance, reaffirming their longstanding opposition to any collaboration with SD via a post on Instagram: “Luf has always been against collaborating with SD. We still are.” This highlights the generational and ideological divides blossoming within Liberalerna.

Additional volatile reactions have surfaced from within the party’s ranks. Jennie Claesson, an Uppsala municipal councilor and group leader, warned that the party could "implode" if the leadership pursues the current course, suggesting that new candidate lists might become necessary should the board maintain its position.

Earlier resignations underscore the depth of frustration. Suzanne Liljegren, Lidingö group leader, stepped down from all her party roles while remaining a local member, criticizing the collaboration with SD for contributing to declining opinion ratings and electoral prospects. Liljegren also highlighted concerns about the party’s direction, referring to controversial decisions such as potential imprisonment for minors and legislative positions that alienate grassroots members.

The Liberalerna board is reportedly divided but remains committed to the SD agreement, which Mohamsson views as critical for sustaining her leadership. However, with growing defections, vocal youth opposition, and threatened withdrawals from key figures, the party faces a profound risk of fragmentation ahead of upcoming political contests.
