Internal Rivalries Shake Tidö Coalition Ahead of Sweden’s 2026 Election

As Sweden approaches its parliamentary elections on September 13, 2026, growing tensions have surfaced within the Tidö coalition, challenging its unity and campaign cohesion. The coalition, composed mainly of the Moderate Party led by Ulf Kristersson, the Christian Democrats under Ebba Busch, the Sweden Democrats headed by Jimmie Åkesson, and the Liberals, faces internal discord amid mounting competition and diverging strategies.

Jimmie Åkesson has openly criticized coalition partners, particularly targeting the Liberals and Christian Democrats. Åkesson accused Ebba Busch of ambiguous political positioning and what he termed a “flirtation” with opposition leader Magdalena Andersson, which has frustrated him and cast doubts on Busch’s credibility. He encouraged voters inclined to oppose Andersson and the Social Democrats to prefer the Sweden Democrats over the Christian Democrats to avoid inadvertently supporting Andersson. This marks a rare public challenge within the coalition, signaling intensified rivalry for leadership post-election.

In response, Ebba Busch defended her leadership during a campaign speech in Sölvesborg, emphasizing her commitment to the coalition and prioritizing Sweden's interests over partisan politics. She distanced herself from Åkesson’s confrontational tone, affirming her different leadership style and confidence in their joint electoral effort alongside Kristersson.

Ulf Kristersson acknowledged the coalition’s internal challenges but stressed ongoing discussions among leaders to maintain unity. While he had earlier cultivated a united front, visible fissures now question the Tidö coalition's stability as it faces a tough election environment.

Aside from internal politics, Kristersson announced proposals to strengthen protections against violence towards women, including measures such as police warnings to potential victims, enhanced surveillance methods, and involuntary detention for men posing clear threats. These initiatives add to the campaign’s focus on law and order, contrasting with the Social Democrats' push for harsher penalties for sexual offenses.

As the election draws near, Tidö coalition leaders grapple with balancing political rivalry and alliance cohesion, with the outcome likely to determine both government formation and future leadership dynamics within the Swedish right-wing bloc.
