Ikea Announces Major Layoffs Impacting Over 850 Employees in Sweden

Ikea has unveiled a major cost-cutting initiative resulting in the layoff of over 850 employees, primarily affecting its Swedish operations. The layoffs will be implemented in two phases, with more than 600 employees expected to leave by summer and an additional 250 afterward. The wave of job cuts heavily impacts workers in Malmö and Älmhult, two key Swedish locations for Ikea, amid a backdrop of declining profitability and strategic restructuring.

This current round of layoffs follows earlier cuts in March, when 945 jobs were already announced for termination. It also coincides with the closure of Ikea's Borlänge store, marking the company’s first store shutdown in Sweden in over four decades, which left 230 employees facing uncertainty.

Ikea’s financial difficulties played a crucial role in these decisions. Inter Ikea’s operating profit fell sharply from around 25 billion SEK to nearly 19 billion SEK in the last fiscal year. This decline has been attributed to the complex aftermath of the pandemic, which continues to challenge the company’s financial stability.

Henrik Elm, Ikea’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasized the necessity of these tough choices for the company’s future. He pointed to the need for “faster decision-making, less complexity,” and more streamlined operations to adapt better to the current economic climate. Elm acknowledged the difficulty of the layoffs but assured that the process would be conducted with respect and care, aligned with Ikea’s cultural values.

The company has already experienced multiple rounds of staff reductions in a short span, signaling a substantial reshaping of its workforce and operations in Sweden and elsewhere. These measures underline Ikea’s commitment to financial prudence and operational efficiency as it navigates ongoing post-pandemic challenges.
