Heavy Snowstorm Causes Major Bus Disruptions Across Stockholm

Stockholm has been hit by a severe snowstorm causing significant disruptions in bus traffic across the city on January 5, 2026. Heavy snowfall and icy conditions resulted in multiple buses getting stuck and operational challenges for Nobina and SL, the city’s public transport authority.

In Tullinge, Nobina faced a crisis when eleven buses became trapped on a hill due to thick snow cover. Carin Tellström, Nobina's spokesperson, attributed the chaos to an overload of information given to drivers about road conditions and snow removal, making it difficult to manage the situation effectively. Nobina has since increased staffing levels and is closely monitoring weather and road safety, especially in problematic areas. Simultaneously, SMHI issued a new yellow weather warning predicting an additional 15 centimeters of snow, raising concerns about further travel difficulties.

Meanwhile, in Älvsjö, the bus situation was described as "chaos" by passengers when several buses were immobilized by snow and slush during the afternoon rush hour. Despite these incidents, SL reported that overall bus traffic conditions were generally good. Aleksander Krajisnik from SL acknowledged that Älvsjö was a busy junction and noted that the agency had not received immediate confirmation of the chaos. However, he confirmed a collision of two buses near Danderyd Hospital that required emergency services to intervene.

Furthermore, an SL bus on route 401 had to be evacuated after sliding backward into a railing near the London viaduct due to slippery road conditions. Passengers reported hazardous conditions while leaving the bus. SL continues to advise passengers to stay updated via their app and website as they work closely with Nobina, which operates the buses, to manage the disruptions.

As Stockholm braces for continued severe weather, authorities emphasize vigilance and preparation amid the ongoing challenges to public transport caused by heavy snow and icy roads.
