Gröna Lund Fined Over 5 Million Kronor After 2023 Jetline Accident: Survivors Speak Out

Gröna Lund and Göteborgs Mekaniska Werkstad AB were sentenced to hefty fines following the tragic June 24, 2023, Jetline roller coaster accident that caused one death and severely injured eight others. Gröna Lund was fined 5.2 million kronor, while Göteborgs Mekaniska Werkstad AB was fined 1.3 million kronor for gross negligence leading to death and injury, as ruled by the court. The incident involved a welding fault deemed unprofessional, which led to the crash. Survivors Karin and Mikael Elmegard, who suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple fractures and lung embolisms for Karin, expressed relief and gratitude for their survival after a long, difficult recovery. They received compensation of 109,000 and 27,000 kronor respectively, totaling 137,000 kronor. However, the couple criticized the authorities’ decision not to award compensation to the children of the woman who died in the accident. Mikael also accused Gröna Lund of distancing themselves from victims after the accident due to legal worries. Jan Eriksson, Gröna Lund’s CEO, stated the park has implemented changes to prevent similar incidents and will review the court ruling before commenting further. Prosecutor Frida Molander, who aimed for a 12 million kronor fine, is contemplating an appeal. The survivors emphasize the importance of accountability following the traumatic event that profoundly affected their lives.
