Former Handball Player Viktor Rhodin Dies at Age 31 After Battle with Brain Cancer

Viktor Rhodin, a former elite handball player, passed away on January 6, 2026, at the age of 31 after a determined battle with a malignant brain tumor. Diagnosed in spring 2020 following an epileptic seizure, Rhodin underwent surgery that summer, but some cancerous cells remained. Despite the challenges, he made a remarkable comeback into elite handball, initially considering playing with a protective helmet, but ultimately playing without one for clubs including Önnereds HK and later Aranäs, his final team.

In early 2024, Rhodin faced devastating news as his cancer returned and was deemed inoperable, leading to a rapid deterioration of his health. His partner, Mikaela, mourned the loss of "the world's finest person and father," emphasizing that his presence will forever remain in their hearts. They leave behind their daughter, Inez.

The handball community also expressed deep sorrow. Coach Jerry Hallbäck described Rhodin as a "wonderfully warm person with fantastic qualities," while fellow player Sebastian Karlsson called him "the kindest person" and praised his caring nature.
