    Key details

  • • Folkhälsomyndigheten proposes significant organizational changes.
  • • A new department for infection control and preparedness will be formed.
  • • Leadership will include qualified medical professionals in response to criticism.
  • • Discussions with unions are ongoing, with no final decision yet.

In response to significant criticism regarding its leadership's medical expertise and pandemic preparedness, the Folkhälsomyndigheten (Public Health Agency of Sweden) is proposing a major organizational restructuring. The changes were initiated following concerns raised by former state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslén, who criticized the agency for lacking the necessary medical expertise in its upper management to effectively handle future public health emergencies.

According to Gisslén, the agency's leadership has not demonstrated sufficient depth in medical knowledge, casting doubts on its capacity to manage future pandemics successfully. Acknowledging these issues, the Folkhälsomyndigheten plans to reorganize its existing structure by combining two departments into three smaller units, with a new focus on enhancing infection control and preparedness. This newly established department is set to be led by a qualified medical doctor with extensive relevant experience, a move that aims to bolster the agency's overall leadership capability in dealing with health threats.

General Director Olivia Wigzell emphasized that these reorganizational efforts align with the agency's broader goals of readiness for emerging health threats, including mental health promotion and addressing lifestyle habits tied to public health.

However, it has been noted that no final decisions have been made yet as negotiations with labor unions are ongoing, with an implementation timeline still undecided. This restructuring signifies a proactive approach by Folkhälsomyndigheten in addressing previous shortcomings while enhancing its capacity to respond to future health crises effectively.
