Five Measles Cases Confirmed Linked to Urkult Festival in Sweden

In August 2026, Swedish health authorities confirmed five cases of measles, with three individuals having attended the Urkult festival held in Ångermanland between July 30 and August 1. The Folkhälsomyndigheten has urged those who participated in the festival to monitor themselves for symptoms of measles, which include a dry cough, red and light-sensitive eyes, high fever, and a rash that typically begins on the face before spreading across the body.

Due to the highly contagious nature of measles and the possibility of serious health complications, especially for unvaccinated individuals, the health authority emphasizes the importance of timely medical consultation. They advise anyone suspecting infection to contact healthcare providers by phone beforehand to reduce exposure risks.

Johanna Rubin, a physician from Folkhälsomyndigheten's vaccination program unit, reassured the public that two doses of the measles vaccine provide strong protection. Since measles is rare in Sweden because of the childhood vaccination program, the risk of a wider outbreak remains low.
