Five Fatal Traffic Accidents Mark Midsummer Weekend in Sweden

The Midsummer weekend in Sweden witnessed five fatal traffic accidents despite overall stable traffic conditions, according to reports from Trafikverket and local authorities.

On Midsummer's eve, an elderly couple in their 80s attempting to cross a median opening on Road 40 near Borås were fatally struck from behind and later died en route to the hospital. Shortly after 3 AM on Midsummer night near Länna in Stockholm, a motorcyclist crashed off the road and succumbed to life-threatening injuries at the hospital.

Later on Sunday afternoon, a single-vehicle accident occurred near Mörtträsk in Kalix municipality on road 720. Two people died when the vehicle went off the road into rough terrain. Emergency services including a police helicopter responded to the scene; the incident is being investigated as gross negligence in traffic.

Despite these tragedies, Denny Josefsson, spokesperson for Trafikverket, described the overall traffic flow during one of the busiest travel periods as normal. However, heavy congestion and long queues were reported, particularly on Ölandsbron, where multiple vehicle breakdowns contributed to delays.

Josefsson urged drivers to treat one another kindly amid the busy travel period. The combination of these accidents marks a significant rise in fatalities compared to the average of four deaths typically seen during Midsummer weekends over the last five years.
