FIS to Hold World Skiing Championships Annually, Surprising Swedish Ski Community

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has announced a major change: the World Skiing Championships will now be held every year during non-Olympic seasons instead of every two years. This decision, made by the FIS Council, aims to include events across Nordic skiing (such as cross-country, ski jumping, and Nordic combined), alpine skiing, freestyle, and snowboarding disciplines.

The announcement came as a surprise to representatives of the Swedish Ski Association and active Swedish athletes, who were not previously informed of this adjustment. The Swedish women's cross-country team recently showcased their dominance by winning gold in all distances at the 2025 World Championships in Trondheim, underscoring Sweden's strong position in the sport.

FIS plans to implement the annual championship cycle starting in 2032 but is considering a possible earlier start as soon as 2028. The federation's press release detailed that championships will occur in both odd and even years when Olympic Games are not taking place, significantly increasing the frequency of high-level competition for athletes.
