FIFA Fines Swedish Football Association 90,000 Kronor Over Fans' Booing of Polish National Anthem

The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) has been fined 90,000 kronor by FIFA due to Swedish fans booing Poland's national anthem during the World Cup playoff at Strawberry Arena on March 31, 2026. Sweden won the match 3-2, securing qualification for the World Cup, but the victory was marred by this disciplinary incident.

SvFF's Secretary General Niclas Carlnén expressed regret about the incident, stating, "We regret what happened and share FIFA's view that booing our guests' national anthem is disrespectful. We do not want to see such behavior from our audience." He emphasized the importance of respectful conduct during national anthems, while acknowledging the loyalty and engagement of Swedish supporters.

This penalty marks the second time in recent months that SvFF has been sanctioned for similar behavior. Sweden was previously fined 60,000 kronor after fans booed during the Swiss national anthem in an October qualifying match. SvFF has accepted the current fine without appeal and hopes for improved respect from supporters in upcoming tournaments.

Maja Nilsson Lindelöf, a Swedish player, also publicly expressed embarrassment over the crowd's actions on social media. The Federation aims to foster a better atmosphere during international matches by discouraging such disrespectful conduct.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in managing fan behavior at international fixtures despite sporting success, underscoring the importance FIFA and SvFF place on sportsmanship and respect among competing nations.
