Fantomapp Launches to Protect Swedish Children from Social Media Harms

The Swedish Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY) has unveiled Fantomapp, a new app designed to safeguard children aged 10 to 15 from social media risks such as cyberbullying, hacking, and privacy issues. Developed with direct input from young users, the app aims to be accessible and relevant, fostering open conversations between parents and children about safe social media use.

Key features include guidance on reporting cyberbullying, step-by-step instructions for blocking unwanted contacts, tools to test password security, and options to anonymize photos and assess profile privacy settings. Fantomapp also educates users on where to seek help if their accounts are hacked or if they experience online harassment.

Malin Blixt, head of IMY's department, emphasized the app's role in increasing children's awareness and reducing vulnerabilities online. The app was funded by the European Union and tailored to Swedish circumstances in cooperation with the French data protection authority CNIL, ensuring it meets local user needs effectively.

By blending expert knowledge with user-centered design, Fantomapp represents a significant step forward in equipping children and their families with practical tools to safely navigate the challenges of social media environments.
