Fagersta School Attack Investigation Reveals Two Suspects Denying Charges Amid Lengthy Inquiry

One week after the tragic school attack in Fagersta, which resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl and injuries to three teenage boys, the police investigation remains extensive and ongoing. Authorities have conducted approximately 150 interrogations so far, with hundreds more anticipated as the inquiry continues. Two suspects are currently in custody: 18-year-old Liam Nebel, who faces charges of murder and attempted murder, and a 16-year-old boy suspected of aiding Nebel in the crimes. Both suspects deny the charges against them.

The 16-year-old suspect was not physically present during the attack at Brinellskolan but is alleged to have encouraged Nebel to carry out the assault. Prosecutor Ann-Sofie Trossing highlighted the complexity of the case and noted that she has requested an extended time frame to prepare the indictment, with the deadline currently set for September 21. She also indicated that the crime's investigation period extends from May 1 to the date of the attack on August 21, underscoring the detailed nature of the inquiry.

The police investigation includes thorough crime scene analyses and broad information gathering, especially from online sources. Communication between the suspects reportedly took place through online forums, linked to the global True Crime Community (TCC), with Nebel’s involvement in this group raising concerns about extremist influences. However, it remains unclear if the investigation will extend beyond Sweden’s borders.

Police investigator John Santaniemi refrained from answering media questions to avoid influencing further testimonies, emphasizing the need for confidentiality during ongoing operations, including searches performed in a residential area south of Stockholm. Authorities have also urged parents to monitor their children's social media activity closely, highlighting the importance of community awareness in aiding the investigation.
