Fagersta Community and Neighboring Municipalities Unite in Mourning After School Sword Attack

Fagersta continues to mourn following the sword attack at Brinellskolan, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries among students. A solemn memorial outside the school drew many residents to pay their respects, reflecting a deep sense of sorrow and solidarity within the community. Sixteen-year-old Elsa Bergkvist noted the somber mood, saying, "It feels completely different. You can tell everyone is sad." Meanwhile, student Lana Halabiah highlighted the importance of remembering both those who died and those who remain injured.

Two boys aged between 12 and 17 are still in serious condition, while a third under-18 victim has been discharged from the hospital. In support, neighboring municipalities of Avesta, Hedemora, and Smedjebacken canceled their campaign events to focus on offering assistance to Fagersta. Niklas Sjödin, communication chief of Smedjebacken, described the attack as "a horrific event". Collaboration between these communities is strong, with residents commonly commuting for work and education.

To provide emotional aid, Smedjebacken's Söderbärke church opened its doors for support, and its youth center remains available for counseling. Avesta has deployed crisis support efforts at Karlfeldt-gymnasiet, despite no students from Avesta attending the affected school. A candlelight vigil is planned in both Avesta and Fagersta, with local leaders gathering to honor the victims and show regional solidarity.
