External Investigations Launched Over Political Interference in Swedish Municipalities

Recent allegations of unauthorized political interference in municipal civil servants' decision-making have prompted external investigations in Karlskrona and Säffle municipalities. In Karlskrona, civil servants reported that politicians improperly influenced their administrative work, leading Mats Nilsson, chairman of the audit committee, to announce a forthcoming external review. This follows indications in the Environmental and Community Building Committee’s latest internal control plan that politicians impacted official decisions.

Similarly, an external investigation in Säffle revealed that a case worker changed a decision after threats from a politician. Interim municipal director Mattias Anglemark emphasized the seriousness of the situation. The politician confronted the case worker in their office, alleging the decision was incorrect and threatening to return if it was not immediately reversed. The politician, however, insists that their actions were merely suggestions for further discussion.

These incidents underscore growing concerns about political pressure undermining municipal governance integrity. Both municipalities are now undertaking thorough investigations to address the allegations and restore trust in administrative processes.
