Exposing the Complex Realities of Egg Donation and Surrogacy in Colombia

Recent investigations have unveiled the ethical complexities surrounding egg donation and surrogacy in Colombia, which has become a key destination for international surrogacy arrangements. According to Dagens Nyheter, many egg donors are young Latin American women, often students, who donate eggs confidentially. However, some of these donors engage simultaneously in sex work on live streaming platforms to support themselves financially. Valentina, a donor from Bogotá’s poorest area, spent nearly a year selling sexual services online before donating her eggs through a surrogacy clinic.

Alejandra Hernandes Lesmes, a surrogate recruiter in Colombia, describes a high demand for donors with European features such as light skin and blue eyes. Donors fitting these traits can earn up to $3,000, while those with typical Latin American features receive substantially less, around $500. Alejandra also notes a growing interest in independent surrogacy arrangements outside conventional clinics.

Niklas Thenstedt, a Swedish man pursuing surrogacy abroad due to Sweden’s surrogacy ban, has chosen an anonymous Colombian egg donor. He voiced concerns about the donors' socio-economic backgrounds and the ethical dimensions of surrogacy after experiencing a miscarried pregnancy. Despite this, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of fatherhood.

Pedro Ezequiel Martínez Diaz, founder of the Celagem clinic, clarified that donor assessments focus solely on medical and reproductive criteria, disregarding other legal occupations of the donors. The intertwining of egg donation with sex work and the high demand for certain physical traits illuminate the ethical and socio-economic challenges embedded in Colombia’s surrogacy industry.
