EU Officials Warn Rising Aggression Against Politicians Threatens Democratic Representation

EU Commissioner Michael McGrath has sounded the alarm on increasing aggression and threats aimed at politicians within the European Union, describing it as a grave danger to democratic representation and stability. Speaking at a meeting of EU justice ministers in Luxembourg on October 17, 2025, McGrath warned that unchecked hostility could discourage women, youth, and minorities from engaging in politics, ultimately creating a less representative democracy. He emphasized that while politicians must accept robust criticism, any form of threats or physical violence is "totally unacceptable" and constitutes an attack on democracy itself. McGrath referred to recent incidents across several member states, including arrests in Belgium linked to threats against prominent figures such as PVV leader Geert Wilders and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. To counter this trend, McGrath announced plans to present an EU proposal aimed at enhancing the security of political candidates and elected officials. Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard, whose country holds the EU presidency until January 1, supported these measures, underscoring the necessity of establishing clear boundaries on acceptable conduct within democratic societies and enforcing penalties for violations. This collaborative stance reflects growing EU-wide concern about the implications of rising aggression towards politicians and the urgent need to safeguard democratic integrity and participation.
