Double Swedish Triumphs at Göteborgsvarvet 2026: Suldan Hassan and Meraf Bahta Win

The Göteborgsvarvet 2026 race saw remarkable double victories for Swedish runners Suldan Hassan and Meraf Bahta. Hassan clinched the men's title for the second consecutive year, finishing the half-marathon in 1:03:30, nine seconds faster than his time last year. His win came after a close tactical sprint against Norway's Sondre Nordstad Moen, whom he edged out by just one second. Hassan highlighted the challenging windy conditions and said, "It feels fantastic... I felt strong at the end, especially with the crowd behind me."

In the women's race, Meraf Bahta emerged victorious with a time of 1:13:03, becoming the first Swedish woman to win Göteborgsvarvet in 24 years. Bahta took an early lead and controlled the race despite difficult wind conditions. She expressed some disappointment in not breaking her 70-minute goal but enjoyed the race, stating, "The wind made it tough, but I had control the whole way and could enjoy it a bit more."

This year's event attracted around 55,000 participants, with a record 44% female runners, surpassing the usual 40%. The race environment was noted for its strong supportive atmosphere. Notably, Vasaloppet winner Oskar Kardin participated and finished 23rd in 1:11:18.

Both Hassan and Bahta praised the crowd's energy, crediting it for their strong finishes. Hassan is now preparing for the European Championships in Birmingham this summer. These victories mark a significant achievement for Swedish athletics, showcasing national talent on home ground.
