Disney+ Secures Five-Year NHL Streaming Rights in Sweden and Finland Starting 2026

On September 16, 2026, Disney+ announced a landmark five-year agreement with the NHL to stream the league's games in Sweden and Finland beginning with the 2026/27 season. This deal grants Disney+ exclusive access to 160 regular-season NHL games annually, including at least 50 games scheduled at favorable Swedish viewing times. In addition, subscribers will have exclusive access to 20 playoff games each season, featuring the Conference Finals and the Stanley Cup Final.

The games will be broadcast on ESPN via Disney+, with options for Swedish and American commentary, including contributions from renowned commentators such as Mark Messier and PK Subban. This streaming arrangement complements the continued NHL coverage by Viaplay, which has held rights since 2009 and will maintain broadcasting alongside Disney+. Disney+ offers the NHL content for a monthly subscription of 69 kronor, notably more affordable compared to Viaplay's more expensive plans ranging from 299 to 499 kronor.

Karl Holmes, General Manager of Disney+ EMEA, emphasized that hockey is more than just a sport in Sweden and Finland, describing it as a passion deeply embedded across generations. NHL Chief Media Officer David Proper highlighted the strong connection between the NHL and Nordic fans, underscored by the success of Nordic players in the league and the high level of competition showcased.

This agreement is part of Disney+'s broader strategy to expand live sports offerings in Europe, which already include NFL and UEFA competitions. The move capitalizes on the growing popularity of the NHL in Nordic countries and offers fans extensive access to premier hockey action, exclusive studio content, and live coverage through ESPN's digital platforms.

In the previous 2025/26 season, ESPN noted record-high NHL viewership since regaining rights in 2021/22, signaling increasing interest in hockey. Disney+'s subscription service aims to engage both established hockey users and newcomers seeking quality sports entertainment in Sweden and Finland.
