Deadline Looms for Redemption of Sweden's Old Invalid Banknotes

Sweden's central bank, Riksbanken, has imposed a strict deadline for redeeming old, invalid banknotes that ceased to be legal tender in 2017 or earlier. Holders of these notes have until June 30, 2027, to exchange them for current valid currency. The total value of these old notes potentially held in households around Sweden amounts to approximately 3.9 billion SEK. Christina Wejshammar, a department head at Riksbanken, urged the public to search thoroughly at home and consult older relatives, as it is a common oversight to forget possessing these banknotes. There are heightened challenges for reimbursement after ten years, as claimants must provide documentation proving how they acquired the notes, complicated by the banks' inability to provide bank statements from that far back. Additionally, the fee for sending in old banknotes has increased from 200 SEK to 300 SEK. Wejshammar also noted that some individuals might value these old notes beyond their monetary worth due to nostalgia. This new deadline and policy changes underscore the importance of acting promptly to reclaim potentially lost money before the opportunity expires mid-2027.
