Danish Authorities Warn of Possible Öresund Bridge Collapse Amid Severe Flooding

Heavy rainfall has led to alarming traffic disruptions on the Öresund Bridge, as Danish authorities have issued warnings regarding potential structural failure of the motorway. In just two hours, about 8,000 liters of water accumulated in the area, resulting in significant flooding. Police reported traffic jams forming on the bridge in both directions, prompting road closures and redirections beginning early in the morning hours of September 18, 2025.

Authorities are particularly concerned with the stretch of the “Sverigemotorvägen” near Copenhagen Airport, where the integrity of the road’s foundation is reportedly compromised. Henrik Stormer, a spokesperson for the Copenhagen police, highlighted the critical situation, stating, "The foundation of the road is being washed away, which could lead to cracking or worse."

As a result of the severe flooding, many commuters were seen abandoning their vehicles to walk to their destinations, exacerbating congestion issues. The situation remains dynamic, with investigations ongoing to determine the exact causes of the flooding and any potential further impacts on the area’s infrastructure.
