Dangerous Avalanche Conditions in Three Swedish Mountain Areas Warned Until Friday

Severe avalanche warnings have been issued for three key mountain regions in Sweden, posing high risks for winter sports and outdoor enthusiasts. According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's avalanche forecast site, Lavinprognoser, the danger is particularly acute in the southern Lapplandsfjällen, southern Jämtlandsfjällen, and western Härjedalsfjällen. The avalanche risk level is rated three out of five, indicating dangerous conditions where both spontaneous and human-triggered avalanches are likely.

In the southern Lapplandsfjällen, a large accumulation of drift snow has settled on a weak underlying base, creating unstable layers that threaten both mountain plateaus and forested areas near the tree line. The southern Jämtlandsfjällen, including popular skiing areas like Åre, face similar threats with sensitive snow slabs making steep terrain especially risky for skiers. Western Härjedalsfjällen also experiences issues with persistent snow slabs on steep south and east-facing slopes.

These warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. Friday, urging caution and preparedness for skiers and outdoor adventurers. The National Weather Service highlights this as a critical period where avalanche hazards demand respect and vigilance to prevent accidents.
