Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' Wins Palme d'Or at Cannes 2026 in Multi-National Film Co-Production

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d'Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for his film "Fjord," marking his second time receiving this prestigious award since 2007. The film stars Romanian actor Sebastian Stan and Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve, portraying a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple whose aspirations for a new life in Norway unravel into a legal battle when authorities separate them from their five Romanian-born children. Mungiu described the film as a drama addressing "vänsterfundamentalism" and extremism, emphasizing the need for action beyond applause.

"Fjord" is a multi-national co-production involving Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Swedish film companies Filmgate Films, Garagefilm International, and Film i Väst played key roles in production and post-production, with work conducted in Västra Götaland at Filmgate VFX. Film i Väst celebrated its tenth consecutive year of co-productions featured in Cannes' main competition, with three productions selected this year: "Fjord," "Gentle Monster" by Marie Kreutzer, and the short film "The End" by Niki Lindroth von Bahr. Kristina Börjeson, production manager at Film i Väst, expressed pride in the quality and international impact of their collaborations.

The festival also awarded Andrej Zvjagintsev's "Minotaur" the Jury's Grand Prize, and honored directors Pawel Pawlikowski and Spanish filmmakers for Best Director awards. The Cannes event concluded with honorary Palme d'Or awards to Peter Jackson, Barbara Streisand, and John Travolta.
