Court Battle Begins Over Count Hans-Gabriel Trolle-Wachtmeister's Multi-Billion Inheritance

The high-profile legal dispute between two distinguished Swedish noble families over the vast inheritance of the late Count Hans-Gabriel Trolle-Wachtmeister has officially started in Kristianstad District Court. The case, described as the "inheritance conflict of the century," centers on the validity of the count’s last will and his mental state when altering it.

Count Hans-Gabriel, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 100, left behind an estate valued in the billions. Claës Trolle-Wachtmeister, the count’s successor, along with his son Carl-Fredrik, is challenging the will. They claim that the count suffered from severe vascular cognitive impairment in his final years, rendering him incapable of sound decision-making. They further accuse the von Blixen-Finecke family—who stand to benefit from the contested will—of exerting undue influence on the count.

On the other side, Kirstine von Blixen-Finecke, a close friend of the count and former aide to the queen, denies the allegations of undue influence. She asserts their role was supportive during the count’s lonely final years after the loss of other family members. The trial, marked by initial courtroom tension, will stretch over 30 days and involve over 5,000 pages of evidence. It aims not only to resolve this particularly sensitive family dispute but also to clarify important legal principles regarding testamentary capacity and will validity.

This ongoing conflict has strained relations between these noble families for several years, attracting widespread attention to the proceedings. The outcome in December is highly anticipated as it will decide the rightful heir to one of Sweden’s most substantial inheritances.
