Controversy Over Government-Funded Chicken Coop at Harpsund Requested by PM's Wife

In April 2023, Birgitta Ed, wife of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, requested the construction of a chicken coop at Harpsund, the official prime minister's residence in Sörmland. The project, costing 16,691 kronor for materials and labor, was funded through government channels and categorized as a tenant adaptation by Statens fastighetsverk (SFV), which manages the property. Despite the use of taxpayer money, government officials were in frequent communication with Ed about the project and other decorative matters at Harpsund.

The Kristersson couple initially were unaware of the installation invoice but, following media scrutiny, announced they would personally reimburse the government for all costs related to the coop. Birgitta Ed also showed interest in other initiatives such as producing apple juice from the estate, though plans for beekeeping were dismissed by SFV for not fitting their mandate. Opposition parties criticized the use of public funds for personal projects at official residences, adding to earlier controversies involving expensive renovations at Sagerska huset, including a 2,300-kronor bread spatula and cushions costing over 30,000 kronor.

Finance Minister stressed the importance of transparency in government spending amid these revelations. The project was managed by high-ranking officials, and Ed was notably involved in decisions regarding Harpsund despite not holding an official position. The couple's reimbursement statement aims to address concerns about the appropriate use of taxpayers' money.
