Concerns Rise Over Drone Sightings Near Swedish Airports

Recent drone sightings near Swedish airports have raised safety concerns, leading to police investigations and calls for improved drone detection measures. On Thursday morning, a pilot reported two unidentified drones over the Farsta area, close to Arlanda Airport. The incident occurred around 10:30 AM, prompting police to reach out to other pilots for more details and initiate an investigation into reckless air traffic. Similar drone disruptions have happened in Denmark, contributing to the urgency of the situation.

Experts are emphasizing the need for effective anti-drone systems at Swedish airports. Hans Liwång, a professor specializing in defense systems, stated that establishing effective radar to detect and track drones is neither expensive nor complex. He noted that while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson acknowledged the existence of anti-drone measures, there remains uncertainty regarding their effectiveness and coverage at current airport infrastructures. Liwång highlighted the necessity for specialized radar that can detect small aerial drones within several kilometers of airports to assist in police investigations.

Although there are technologies available to neutralize drones, such as electromagnetic systems, their safety risks to ground personnel and equipment make them questionable for deployment over airports. Liwång criticized vague reports of drones at neighboring Danish airports, suggesting that they likely stem from miscommunication or overcaution. With these developments, airport safety remains a pressing issue that authorities are eager to address swiftly.
