Colombia Signs €3.1 Billion Deal to Purchase 17 Swedish Gripen Fighter Jets

Saab has secured a landmark contract with Colombia for the sale of 17 Gripen fighter jets, in a deal valued at approximately 3.1 billion euros, or over 34 billion Swedish kronor. The purchase includes 15 Gripen E models and 2 Gripen F two-seat variants, with deliveries planned between 2026 and 2032. Saab CEO Micael Johansson highlighted the strategic importance of this agreement, describing it as the start of a strong and long-term partnership that will enhance Colombia’s air defense capabilities, benefit its citizens, and foster innovation within the country. \n\nBeyond the aircraft sale, Saab and Colombia have signed two additional agreements aimed at industrial cooperation in sectors such as aviation technology, cybersecurity, health, sustainable energy, and water purification technology. This broader collaboration reflects a commitment to deepen ties across defense and technological fields. \n\nSwedish government leaders have welcomed the deal enthusiastically. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, speaking in a video message to Colombian media, underscored the continuation of over 150 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and praised the competitiveness and high technological level of Sweden’s defense industry. Defense Minister Pål Jonson emphasized that Colombia would receive one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets and expressed eagerness to expand defense cooperation.
