Christian Democrats Position Themselves as Hope for Tidö Coalition Amidst Intra-Coalition Criticism

As Sweden gears up for the 2026 election, the Christian Democrats (KD), led by Ebba Busch, are presenting themselves as the hopeful force within the Tidö coalition, focusing on family welfare reforms and rejecting closer ties with the Social Democrats. Busch, speaking during her campaign tour aboard the "Busch-bussen," expressed confidence in KD's improving fortunes, noting a rise in the party's approval ratings beyond their 2022 election results. She emphasized the party’s identity as a "right with heart," advocating for expanded family support measures such as increasing child benefits to 2,000 kronor per month and reducing preschool group sizes.

Busch also contested claims by Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson about limited fiscal space, arguing for room for essential investments through borrowing tied to economic growth. She reiterated KD's stance against formal cooperation with a Social Democrat-led government, despite acknowledging issue-based agreements. Her party's manifesto features ten key promises, including healthcare wait time reductions, tax reforms, and welfare improvements.

However, KD's approach has drawn criticism from within the Tidö coalition. Sweden Democrats (SD) leader Jimmie Åkesson, in his summer speech in Sölvesborg, challenged the trustworthiness of KD and Busch, suggesting that their flirtation with the Social Democrats risks weakening the conservative block. Åkesson expressed doubts about the Tidö coalition's unity as the election nears and claimed that SD has been the main driver of significant political achievements in the past term, accusing KD of poor strategic choices.

These internal tensions highlight challenges within the coalition while KD pushes its campaign message centered on family welfare and a balanced political stance. As the election approaches, the effectiveness of KD's positioning and the coalition's cohesion will be critical factors in shaping Swedish politics.
