Charges Filed in 21-Year-Old Double Murder Cold Case in Brattås After DNA Breakthrough

More than 21 years after the brutal double murder of Tor Öberg and Gerd Wiklund on their farm in Brattås, Härnösand, a significant legal development has emerged. A 45-year-old man has been charged following new breakthroughs in the cold case, stemming from advances in DNA analysis technology. Prosecutors have expressed strong confidence in the evidence against him, marking a pivotal moment in Sweden's largest cold case.

Tor Öberg and Gerd Wiklund were murdered around late May to early June 2005. The victims sustained fatal blunt force trauma, with prosecutors alleging the suspect lured one victim into a barn before the attack. For many years, the case remained unsolved, categorized as a cold case, despite the discovery of DNA from an unknown perpetrator at the crime scene.

This changed after legislative reforms in 2025 allowed broader use of biometric analysis. Investigators applied new genealogical DNA research techniques to evidence dating from 2005, ultimately identifying the suspect now in custody since spring 2026. Prosecutor Hanna Flordal stated in a press release, "The evidence is strong," underscoring the weight of the forensic breakthroughs.

However, the suspect denies all charges. His lawyer, Johan Lavås, has contested the sufficiency of the evidence, pointing to alternative explanations for the DNA found on a victim's sock and stressing that no direct motive has been established.
