Centerpartiet Undergoes Leadership Shift with Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist and New Party Secretary

Centerpartiet is undergoing significant leadership changes following the election of Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist as the new party leader over the past weekend. This transition has prompted the resignation of the party secretary, Karin Ernlund, who has served since 2023 and plans to pursue new opportunities post her tenure.

Karin Ernlund, who has been involved in Centerpartiet since 2009, expressed on Instagram that at age 40 and with Ringqvist's appointment as leader, it is an appropriate time for her to step down and explore other avenues. Ernlund’s political career covers diverse roles, including press secretary and city councilor in Stockholm. She was appointed party secretary under former leader Muharrem Demirok and maintained the role during Anna-Karin Hatt's brief leadership.

Following Ernlund’s departure, Hannes Hervieu, currently the party's chief of staff, has been named the new party secretary. Hervieu, who previously chaired Centerstudenter and has a varied background as a stand-up comedian and press secretary for Annie Lööf, brings a fresh and modern outlook to the role. He emphasized that politics must be results-oriented and focused on forward-thinking solutions to meet everyday citizens' needs. Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist expressed confidence in Hervieu, praising his proactive contributions during the party's recent political development.

Johnny Cato, previously a member of parliament, is set to succeed Hervieu as chief of staff.

These leadership adjustments come at a pivotal moment for Centerpartiet, with the party preparing for the 2024 European Parliament elections and aiming to renew its political programs. Ernlund’s resignation and Hervieu’s appointment signal a strategic effort to modernize and strengthen the party’s leadership team amid these changes.

A press conference was scheduled for November 19, 2025, to formally announce the new party secretary and discuss the leadership transition further.
