Centerpartiet Threatens Opposition Over Socialdemokraterna’s Plan to Abolish Karensavdraget

Centerpartiet leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist has declared that her party will move into opposition if Socialdemokraterna pursue their election promise to abolish the karensavdraget, a critical labor policy. The proposal, which aims to remove the waiting period before sickness benefits kick in, is seen by Socialdemokraterna as correcting an injustice for workers who cannot work from home while ill. However, Ringqvist warns this change could impose significant financial strain on businesses and the broader economy.

The cost implications are substantial. Initial estimates place the price tag between 5 and 6 billion kronor, but these figures could soar to 12 to 21 billion kronor when factoring in a predicted increase in sick days. Ringqvist criticized the policy for potentially stifling job growth by raising operational costs for employers. Instead of unilateral changes, she advocates resolving such complex issues through negotiations among the involved parties.
