Celebrated Swedish Artist Lena Cronqvist Passes Away at 86

Lena Cronqvist, the esteemed Swedish artist known for her poignant explorations of personal and familial themes, has died at 86. Her family confirmed the news on July 31, 2025. Born in Karlstad in 1938, Cronqvist emerged as a significant figure in the art world during the 1970s and was celebrated for her multidisciplinary approach, including painting, sculpture, graphic art, and illustration.

Throughout her prolific career, Cronqvist's artwork, which began with her education in Brighton and at Konstfack, often delved into themes of loneliness, family dynamics, and her own experiences with mental health, particularly postnatal psychosis. This personal battle influenced her hauntingly intimate pieces following a period of recovery in a mental hospital. In her later works, especially during the 1980s, she focused on depictions of young girls, which have been described as both naive and darkly insightful.

Cronqvist's notable pieces are represented in major institutions like the Nationalmuseum and Moderna museet, and she gained recognition not only for her art but also for her contribution to the academic field, receiving the title of professor and being honored with membership in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Her painting "Trolovningen" sold for a historic 9.2 million SEK in 2016, marking it as the highest auction price for a living Swedish artist.
