Captain Arrested as Investigation Intensifies in Fatal Tjörn Boating Collision

A tragic collision between a Norwegian cargo ship and a recreational boat near Tjörn has resulted in the deaths of a woman and a child, with an intensive investigation now underway. The cargo ship's captain was arrested on suspicion of causing death and negligence in maritime traffic, as prosecutors cited both the risk of flight and potential interference with witnesses. The cargo vessel, carrying an eight-member crew from Russia and Ukraine, has been seized and anchored near Älgön in Hakefjorden.

Authorities have secured the ship's black box, which contains critical audio and radar data from the ship’s navigation bridge. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has begun its detailed analysis, seeking to understand why the cargo ship did not detect the smaller recreational boat until the moment of collision. Fredrik Hjorth, a maritime expert, described the accident as puzzling, given that recreational boats and commercial vessels commonly share these waters in the summer. He also noted that poor weather conditions might have impacted radar performance.

The accident occurred late Tuesday night and involved four people on the smaller boat, two of whom were rescued and are hospitalized in stable condition. The woman was found dead in the water, and the search continues for her missing child, who is also presumed dead. Police have interviewed the cargo ship's crew and the surviving recreational boat occupant, while continuing to gather witness statements to clarify the circumstances. The prosecutor's office has emphasized the complexity of the case, pointing to nighttime and adverse weather conditions as contributing factors.

Company officials from the Norwegian shipping firm expressed surprise at the incident and pledged full cooperation with investigators, highlighting the need to understand the causes to prevent future tragedies.
