Calle Halfvarsson’s Sixth-Place Finish Boosts His 2026 Olympic Hopes

Swedish cross-country skier Calle Halfvarsson delivered a strong performance by finishing sixth in the 10 km classic race at the Oberhof World Cup, positioning himself as a leading contender for a spot on Sweden’s 2026 Winter Olympic team. The 36-year-old veteran expressed surprise and pride at his effort, revealing that he pushed himself to the limit and nearly blacked out from exhaustion after crossing the finish line.

Halfvarsson’s result was the best among Swedish competitors, narrowly missing the podium by just ten seconds. The national team’s chief, Anders Byström, highlighted the significance of this finish for Olympic qualification, noting it as a crucial milestone. Teammate Johan Häggström also strengthened his Olympic prospects with a twelfth-place finish.

The performance impressed both Swedish and Norwegian experts. Norwegian skier Erik Valnes emphasized Halfvarsson’s importance to Swedish skiing and insisted that he should be selected for the Olympics, while SVT expert Mathias Fredriksson agreed that the race secured a place for Halfvarsson at the Games. Coach Anders Högberg praised the result, especially considering Halfvarsson’s challenging prior season, which had limited his competition primarily to the Scandinavian Cup.

With Sweden yet to fill two remaining men’s Olympic spots, the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) is expected to finalize decisions soon following consultations with the national team.
